III. MMA Waterproofing and Anticorrosion Coatings FAQs
1. Why does the coating bubble, hollow, or peel?
Causes:
• Damp Substrate :Excessive moisture content in the substrate
• Uncleanness :Presence of dust, oil, or loose particles on the surface
• Insufficient Strength:The substrate itself lacks the required strength
• Weak Bond :A poor bond exists between the underlying cement mortar and the substrate
Solution:
• Ensure the base layer is solid, flat, dry (moisture content <10%), and clean.
• Before application, the concrete surface must be thoroughly shot blasted or polished to the specifiedroughness (e.g., csp3-csp5) and all contaminants removed.
• Blistered and hollow areas should be cut away and repaired before reapplying.
2.What Causes a Paint Film to Dry Slowly, Become Tack-Backed, or Even Fail to Cure?
Causes:
• Incorrect Curing Agent Ratio: The curing agent (BPO) was added in the wrong proportion or not added.
• Inadequate Mixing: Components A and B were not mixed thoroughly or evenly.
• Low Ambient Temperature: Application or curing occurred at an ambient temperature that was too low.
• Solution: Strictly follow the ratio and sequence specified in the product manual to ensure that material A, material B, and the curing agent are thoroughly mixed. Avoid construction in environments below 5℃(except for special low-temperature formulations). Take insulation measures if necessary.
3. What causes cracking, chalking, or discoloration in the coating?
Causes:
• Excessive paint film thickness.
• High deformation stress from cracks in the substrate.
• Over-diluted material.
• Poor resin weather ability (if counterfeit).
• Excessively alkaline base.
-Solution: Control the thickness of each coat and follow product recommendations. Choose an appropriate base treatment (primer) for the concrete substrate to seal the substrate and enhance adhesion.
Any chalking or discoloration should be removed and then recoated.
4. How to identify Authentic MMA Coatings?
Due to the high cost of MMA raw materials, cheaper materials such as polyurethane and polyurea are sometimes used in the market to counterfeit products. You can use the following methods for preliminary identification:
• Look at the packaging: Genuine MMA is three-component (liquid A, liquid B, powder curing agent),while polyurethane/polyurea is usually two-component.
• Smell: MMA contains methyl methacrylate monomer, which has a distinctive pungent odor, polyurethane has an amine or ether odor.
• Trial Curing: MMA without curing agent will not cure after mixing, polyurethane/polyurea A/B group can cure after mixing.
• Performance Measurement: a fully cured MMA coating has high hardness (Shore D ≥ 50).high tensile strength (≥ 12 MPa), and is difficult to break by hand. Counterfeit materials have lower hardness, lower strength, and are prone to breaking.
IV. Colored Anti-Slip Pavement FAQs
1. Why do ceramic particles fall off after use of colored anti-slip pavement?
Causes:
• Insufficient or poor-quality adhesive.
• Damp and contaminated base layer.
• Excessive rolling.
• Improper construction (uneven application, premature traffic).
Solution: Use a high-bonding adhesive (such as polyurethane MMA) and adhere to a strict mix ratio; dry and clean the base before construction; limit heavy loads to traffic and perform repairs promptly.
2. Why does the colored anti-slip layer crack?
Causes:
• Cracks or settling in the base layer.
• Excessively rigid materials (such as epoxy resin)or excessive filler.
• Internal stress caused by drastic changes in temperature and humidity.
Solution: Reinforce the base layer and polish cracks ; choose a flexible resin (polyurethane modified) ; keep the filler ratio≤30% ; avoid construction in extreme weather.
3. Why do dense bubbles appear in colored anti-slip pavement?
Causes: Damp base layer or material.
• Water accumulation in potholes.
• Adhesive not defoamed.
• High temperature and high humidity environment.
Solution: Test moisture content (if >8%, waterproofing is recommended); add 0.5%-1% defoamer to the adhesive; fill potholes and remove dust, prohibit construction on rainy days.
4.Why does the road surface have uneven color or fade?
Cause:
• Uneven pigment dispersion or poor weathering resistance.
• Excessively high adhesive acidity leading to chemical reactions.
• Mixed batches or construction interruptions.
Solution: Use weather-resistant aggregate and separate metallic pigments; stir the primary agent for ≥5 minutes; continuous operation for the same batch of materials; cover the entire surface with severe color differences.
Core: Strict material quality control + dry and clean base layer + standardized construction =long-lasting anti-slip pavement.
V. Traffic Marking Paint FAQs
1. How long can traffic marking paint be stored?
All components must be stored in a cool, dry, well -ventilated area away from direct sunlight. The storage temperature should not exceed 45℃ or fall below 5℃. Under normal storage conditions, the shelf life of unopened products ls one year.
2. What ls the Marking Area of one Ton of Two-Component Road Marking Paint?
The marking area of one ton of two-component road marking paint depends primarily on the designed thickness.
Typically, when spraying, at a thickness of 0.6mm, the application amount is 0.8 -1kg per square meter, with a theoretical spray coverage of approximately 600 m2. When scraping, at a thickness of 1.2mm, the application amount is 3-4kg per square meter, with a theoretical scraping coverage of approximately 300 m2. The actual area will vary depending on factors such as road conditions, construction techniques, and material loss. It isrecommended to conduct a small area measurement before construction for accurate calculations.
Other factors affecting actual usage:
In addition to marking thickness, the following factors also affect the actual coating area:
• Paint type and density: Two-component paints from different manufacturers and with different formulations may have slight variations in solids content and density, which can affect the amount used per unit area.
• Application method and equipment: Spraying generally achieves a higher paint utilization rate, while processes like scraper coating may result in paint loss due to varying operator technique and equipment precision.
• Road condition: Road surface smoothness, porosity, cleanliness, and dryness all affect paint absorption and loss. New asphalt or porous cement pavement may absorb more paint.
• Addition of glass beads: To achieve a reflective effect, two-component road markings typically mix a certain percentage of glass beads into the paint and then apply a layer of the paint on the surface. The addition of glass beads increases the total volume of the paint, thus affecting the coverage area.
We hope this information ls helpful. If you have specific project requirements, please feel free to contact us, we will provide professional technical support and accurate dosage calculations.
3. What should l do if streaks, voids, or cracks appear on the road marking surface?
Streaks on the road marking surface are usually caused by hard objects in the paint or unclean pavement during application. Check the filter and remove any hard objects. Voids are often caused by air expansion between cracks or moisture in the pavement. Ensure the pavement ls completely dry. Cracking may be caused by cold ground temperatures or overly hard paint, choose an appropriate application temperature and change the paint formula.
4. How can I prevent road markings from peeling?
• The pavement is thoroughly clean.
• The need for a bonding coat can be determined based on the substrate.
• Avoid applying on wet or frozen surfaces.
• The ambient temperature must be at least 5℃.
• Paint must be fully melted and stirred evenly.
• For cement pavements, a penetrating primer should be used.
5. How to improve the Nighttime Reflective Effect of Road Markings?
To improve the nighttime reflective effect, it is necessary to:
• Use high-quality glass beads(refractive index ≥ 1.5),
• Control the appropriate spreading amount (usually 300 -500g /m2),
• Ensure that the glass beads are uniform and transparent, and pay special attention to the sedimentation of the glass beads. During construction, the glass bead spreader needs to be adjusted to the appropriate height and pressure (it is recommended that the spray pressure during spraying process is 0.5-0.1 MPa) to ensure that the coverage is uniform and the glass beads settle to achieve the best effect.
6. What are the main advantages of MMA two-component markings compared to traditional hot melt markings?
• Good and long-lasting reflectivity: Its surface can firmly adhere to the reflective glass beads. the newly drawn white line has a high reflectivity (≥400 mcd·m-2·lx-1) . Even after two years of use, it can still maintain a strong reflectivity (≥250 mcd·m-2·lx-1). It can be seen clearly even on rainy nights, making driving safer.
• More durable and more firmly Adhered: It is very wear-resistant. A thin layer (0.6mm) can offer abrasion resistance comparable to that of a thick coating (2mm) of a hot melt marking. Moreover, it can be tightly bonded to asphalt or cement pavement, ls not easy to crack or peel off, and can be used for a long time.
• Environmentally friendly and safe: This material contains almost no harmful volatile substances (VOC content is extremely low). During construction, there is no need to burn gas for heating like hot melt markings, avoiding the danger of open flames and the risk of burns, which is better for the health of construction workers and the environment.
• Easy and economical maintenance: When renovating old road markings, new road markings can usually be directly applied on top, achieving "One -shot brightening" and eliminating the trouble, expense, and damage to the road surface caused by removing the old road markings.
VI. Construction FAQs
1. What are the ideal construction conditions for road marking projects?
Ideal construction conditions include:
Ambient temperature above 5°C, air humidity≤80%, dry road surface with no water accumulation, and no rain or fog. Before construction. The road surface must be thoroughly cleaned to ensure that it is free of oil, dust, and loose particles. Newly paved roads must be cured for a sufficient period of time before road markingconstruction.
